Monument Presents SUCKERS: A Benefit for Common Good City Farm

October 7, 2011

On Thursday, Oct. 27, Monument returns to DC9 for a benefit concert with two phenomenal acts: Suckers and Rewards. The Brooklyn bands will join forces for a night of swaggering rock and sleek synthpop. The evening will benefit local nonprofit Common Good City Farm. Plus, California’s Lagunitas Brewing is supplying more of its delicious beer, which we can offer to you on the cheap, with proceeds to charity.

SUCKERS
Suckers is a force of nature. It harnesses the voices of four distinct songwriters. It plucks styles from across continents and a half-century of pop music history. It gets your body movin’. And it makes it sound easy. But the band spent years nurturing its sound in New York City – and gaining a reputation for raucous live shows – before releasing its critically-acclaimed full-length debut, Wild Smile, last June. The record is full of huge songs; songs that grow bigger and bigger, folding in trumpets, synths, and skittering beats before culminating in all four members drunkenly singing to the rafters. As Pitchfork put it, “Wild Smile is indeed wild.” Perhaps you caught one of its past headlining shows at Black Cat and Rock n’ Roll Hotel, or more recently opening for Matt & Kim, Menomena, or Local Natives, but know this: Suckers keeps getting better.

REWARDS
You probably already know Aaron Pfenning from his work with Chairlift. Pfenning pulled double (and triple) duty for the band – playing multiple instruments, writing songs, producing, and contributing vocals for its major label debut. But now Pfenning is going at it alone with his ambitious new project, Rewards. This summer, Rewards released the “Equal Dreams” 12” on New York’s prestigious DFA Records. The A-side featured great big handclaps, a creeping bassline, and silky guest vocals from Solange Knowles. The B-side, “Asleep with the Lights”, is an irresistible synthpop jam that boasts guitar work from Lightspeed Champion, aka Blood Orange. All told, it’s one of the year’s most engaging singles, and a sign of great things to come from Rewards.

COMMON GOOD CITY FARM
Common Good City Farm has a simple but powerful mission: grow food, educate, and help low-income DC community members meet their food needs. It effectuates this mission by providing hands-on training in food production, healthy eating, and environmental sustainability. The Farm – located in the heart of the LeDroit Park community – provides a safe outdoor setting to learn, grow, and nourish. Through on-site demonstrations and outreach, Common Good City Farm integrates people of all ages, classes, and races to create vibrant and safe communities. Since 2007, the non-profit has taught over 1000 DC residents in workshops, engaged over 1500 DC school children, and hosted over 2000 volunteers. One volunteer came all the way from England: just this summer, Prince Charles got his hands dirty at the Farm.

LAGUNITAS
Based in Petaluma, California, Lagunitas Brewing Company is one of America’s premier breweries, and – logically then – one of its fasting growing. Lagunitas is best known for its flagship beer, Lagunitas IPA, a self-proclaimed “unique version of an ancient style.” We’ve also been fans for years of its Maximus IPA, Czech Style Pils, Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale, and Brown Shugga’. Monument is truly honored to work with Lagunitas again, and grateful for its continued generosity.
